Streamr 2024 Q4 Transparency Report

Note: This report covers the period between October 1 and December 31, 2024. Approximations are made if a transaction spans multiple quarters. Values are USD unless specified otherwise.

A Message from the Streamr Governance Council

“This inaugural transparency report reflects our commitment to fostering trust and collaboration within the Streamr ecosystem. As stewards of the project, we’re proud to share progress, challenges, and learnings as we build a decentralized future for real-time data.”

This quarter centered on fulfilling the technical roadmap items outlined in the “What’s Next for Streamr” post and implementing the publicly shared strategic vision for the second half of 2024. We’ve made significant progress across all fronts and are in a strong position to deliver an exceptional 2025 for the Streamr community.

This project is a testament to our collective effort—thank you to the developers, node operators, and community advocates pushing the boundaries of decentralized streaming.

As this is the first edition, we warmly welcome feedback on the report structure and content.

Key achievements

  • Completed phase 1 of the native client Streamr SDK, enabling signed and unencrypted proxy publishing from the low-level client to a Streamr node. Implemented convenience wrappers of the native SDK for C, C++, Python, Go, Kotlin (Android) and Swift (iOS).
  • Started a series of large-scale tests to measure and verify the Streamr 1.0 network’s latency and scalability characteristics, especially to quantify the improvements obtained via locality awareness. The results will be available in Q1/2025.
  • Developed support for arbitrary length publisher IDs, enabling the Streamr protocol to be used with a wide range of cryptographic signature algorithms and identity systems, not just the ones used on EVM blockchains (i.e., ECDSA with secp256k1 curve). This paves the way for a broader range of partnerships as well as adopting quantum-resistant cryptography in the future.
  • Partnered with IoTeX and completed a test deployment to their chain, paving the way for starting Streamr’s multichain journey and expanding the protocol’s availability among DePIN builders.
  • Additional partnerships with WeaverLabs (video streaming), JDI (DePIN miner) and together with Kwil and Tlay launched the DePINStack project.
  • Started the project Council and restructured the project to receive steering from it, eliminating leadership bottlenecks and single points of failure.
  • Secured the next segment of project funding via SIP-22, ensuring uninterrupted protocol development for the next 12-24 months, depending on market conditions.
  • Ran internal hackathons and application workshops as first steps in exploring whether the project could boost protocol adoption by building a killer app in-house.

Project financials

  • Approximately 10.2M DATA tokens were minted and distributed to community Node Operators.
  • $920’170 USD was raised from the sale of 22’271’504 minted DATA tokens at an average price of 4.1 cents for project development and growth.
  • At the end of Q4 the project strategic reserve was approximately $711,717 USD.
  • 1.7M DATA tokens generated in network protocol fees.
  • Status of approved project funding packages:
    • SIP-9 (11/2022): 92% used, 7,733,750 DATA remaining
    • SIP-22 (10/2024): 0% used, 100,000,000 DATA remaining

Project expenses

The team size remained more or less the same size during Q4, leading to predictable expenses across the board. Monthly variations are due to lump sum annual invoicing. Spending is categorised under the following six categories.

Admin: HR, accounting, bookkeeping, offices, utilities, financial services.

Business: Bizdev & marketing team salaries, ad and campaign expenses, events.

Leadership: Project leadership salaries.

Legal: Legal and compliance fees.

Overheads: Insurance, mandatory pension payments, taxes.

Tech: Developer salaries, product UX/UI designers, software licenses and cloud services.

Risks and challenges

Adoption
In Q4 2024, the project fell short of its growth objectives for organic stream Sponsorships and network throughput. A strategic realignment will be implemented throughout the first half of 2025 to tackle these challenges.

Technical challenges
A number of legacy nodes within the network have contributed to instability and data latency issues affecting some streams. To address these problems, node operators will be required to upgrade to a minimum supported version of the Streamr node software. This requirement will take effect in Q1 2025.

Our initial multichain deployment was delayed due to the IoTeX chain lacking an official implementation of the DATA token as an ERC677, launch is expected in Q1 2025.

Security vulnerabilities or incidents
There have been no consequential security incidents.

Legal or regulatory updates
There have been no consequential legal or regulatory incidences.
