Freedom tech and the future of an open Internet
At the heart of Streamr’s evolution lies a commitment to freedom tech — technologies designed to be open, neutral, and resilient. In a digital era dominated by monopolistic platforms, Streamr’s decentralized architecture offers a radical alternative: a permissionless and trustless, community-owned network where data sovereignty belongs to users.
Historically, infrastructure of this scale and complexity has only been built by big tech, whose business models have often relied on leveraging user data for revenue. A decentralized, freedom-preserving Internet, built from the ground up by open protocols, does not need to extract value from its users to succeed — Streamr can break the grip of these closed platforms and rewire value creation back to the people. In 2025, freedom tech isn’t a niche — it’s the free Internet, with Streamr as its nervous system.
Why Streamr apps are different
While apps are typically built from a large set of composable technologies, a useful definition of what makes an app a Streamr app is the reliance on the Streamr Network for its core purpose. With this in mind, freedom preserving real-time communication and live video streaming naturally emerge as the foundational features of Streamr powered apps.
Codenamed StreamrTV, this pioneering initiative marks the Streamr project’s first consumer-facing web application, empowering users to broadcast live video via a fully decentralized data network. This won’t just be another app — it will be proof that decentralized freedom tech can deliver seamless, real-world experiences. It will be launched in the first half of 2025 and expect new application announcements throughout the year.
Developing the role of the DATA token in the application layer
The DATA token is the utility token of the Streamr Network, powering decentralized data streaming. It’s used for project governance and to incentivize node Operators on the Network.
Streamr applications can expand the role of the DATA token in new ways:
- Stake to discover
Lock DATA to boost content. This is advertising spend, but done in a way that’s aligned to the community.
- Stake for features
Instead of traditional subscriptions, DATA stakers may gain access to premium features such as sponsored streams or an ad free experience.
- Grow and earn
Building virality. Users contribute to network effects and earn DATA in the process.
In decentralized ecosystems there is a long standing debate as to where the value accrues — at the protocol level or the application level. The Fat Protocol Thesis explains that as apps and services built on decentralized networks, value will (eventually) accrue to the underlying protocol.
By building value capture at both the protocol and application levels, Streamr aligns incentives for node Operators, developers, and the broader community while reinforcing long-term network and token resilience.
Show, don’t just tell – A new approach to communication
A recurring challenge for Streamr as an infrastructure project has been explaining its vision to non-technical audiences. We recognize that a real-time decentralized data streaming protocol can be difficult to grasp. Rather than just describing the technology, to induce mainstream adoption we will adapt our communication style to focus on the Streamr applications that are easy to understand. Moving forward, we aim to engage all Internet users — not just Web3 developers.
